 Record Date 11/08/2007
Location Bowes Moor. Deepdale Beck upstream from Pennine Way footbridge at Levy Pool.
 Civil Parish Bowes
Brit. National Grid NY 968 154
 Altitude 305m
Geology Glacial drift with erratic boulders exposed at intervals in the bed of Deepdale Beck. Many of the erratic booulders are of Shap Granite. Others are slabs of reddened Carboniferous Limestone or of Brockram which originate from the Vale of Eden. The Brockram is an interesting flash flood conglomerate, of Permo-Triassic Age, with angular clasts of carboniferous limestone of local exposure in the Vale of Eden. The Brockram erratics seen in the bed of the stream are moss covered but the angular clasts of limestone set in a red sandstone matrix can be discerned by close examination. No erratics other than those of local origine are present in the bed of Deepdale Beck upstream of the Shap Granite Boulder at NY96256 15183.
Record Name Glacial erratic boulders located in the bed of Deepdale Beck upstream of Levy Pool
Record Description This is a photographic record of a number of interesting glacial erratic boulders located at Levy Pool House and in the bed of Deepdale Beck upstream from the Footbridge crossing of the Pennine Way at Levy Pool.  Additional Notes This is the first of a series of Database Records of the landscape and very extensive Bronze Age settlement remains centred on Ravock, a remote and seldom visited area of high moorland and on the Upper Reaches of Deepdale Beck on Bowes Moor, North of the A66 Road. For details of the origins of the erratic boulders from Permo-Triassic Rock Strata of the Vale of Eden and the Pennine Escarpment including the Brockram Conglomerate and Penrith Sandstone, see I.C. Burgess and A.J. Wadge, 1974 'The Geology of the Cross Fell area.' Institute of Geological Sciences. HMSO 75p. net
